Comparison
Shopify alternatives in Pakistan — an honest comparison
Shopify is excellent software that was never designed for a Pakistani seller. Here is what actually breaks, what it costs you, and when Shopify is still the right answer.
Most Pakistani sellers who ask "what's a good Shopify alternative?" are not unhappy with Shopify's software. They are unhappy with four specific things that have nothing to do with how good the product builder is — billing currency, payment gateways, cash on delivery, and the extra cut taken when you can't use the platform's own payment processor.
This guide covers those four honestly, including the cases where Shopify is still the better choice. We build a competing platform, so read it with that in mind — but every claim here is one you can verify yourself before spending a rupee.
1. Shopify bills you in US dollars
Shopify's subscription is charged in USD. To pay it you need a card that works for international transactions — which, for a lot of small Pakistani sellers, is the first wall they hit. Debit cards issued locally frequently decline, and getting an internationally-enabled card means a bank visit, a form, and often a minimum balance requirement.
You also carry currency risk on a fixed monthly cost. When the rupee moves, your software bill moves with it, in a month where your revenue didn't.
A platform that bills in PKR removes both problems. It isn't a feature — it's the absence of a tax you were paying for no benefit.
2. Shopify Payments does not operate in Pakistan
This is the one that costs the most and gets noticed the least.
Shopify Payments — Shopify's own built-in card processor — is available in a specific list of countries. Pakistan is not on it. That means a Pakistani store must use a third-party gateway for card payments.
And here is the part worth understanding before you sign up: when you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an additional transaction fee on every order — on top of whatever your actual payment gateway charges you. The rate varies by plan and Shopify publishes it on their pricing page.
So the structure for a Pakistani seller is:
- Your gateway's processing fee, plus
- Shopify's third-party transaction fee, plus
- Your monthly subscription in USD
You are paying a surcharge specifically for being in a country Shopify Payments doesn't serve.
3. Local payment methods are not first-class
There is no official EasyPaisa or JazzCash gateway in Shopify. There are workarounds — third-party apps of varying quality, manual payment methods where the buyer is told to transfer and you confirm by hand — but none of it is the native, one-click checkout experience your customers get on local platforms.
Cash on Delivery has the same problem in a different shape. Shopify supports COD, but as a "manual payment method": the order is created and marked unpaid, and everything after that is your problem. There is no built-in confirmation-call workflow, no COD-specific return handling, no order confirmation over WhatsApp — the operational machinery that actually determines whether COD makes or loses you money in this market.
For a platform built elsewhere, COD is an edge case. For a Pakistani store, COD is often the majority of orders.
4. What you're actually choosing between
| Shopify | Storecrafto | |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription currency | USD — needs an international card | PKR |
| Card processing | Shopify Payments unavailable in PK; third-party gateway required | Your own PayFast account |
| Extra platform fee on orders | Yes, when not using Shopify Payments | None — 0% commission |
| EasyPaisa | No official gateway | Built in, your own account |
| Cash on Delivery | Supported as a manual payment method | First-class, with WhatsApp order confirmation |
| Where your money lands | Through the gateway you connect | Directly in your own accounts |
| Custom domain | All plans | Top plan; free subdomain on others |
| App ecosystem | Very large | Small — features are built in, not bolted on |
| Theme marketplace | Very large, paid and free | Curated set, included |
| Support timezone | Global | Pakistan |
5. When Shopify is genuinely the better choice
We would rather you pick correctly than pick us. Choose Shopify if:
- You sell primarily to customers outside Pakistan. Shopify's multi-currency, international
shipping and tax handling are more mature than ours, and the USD billing stops being a problem when your revenue is in USD too.
- You depend on a specific app. If your business runs on a particular subscription-billing,
print-on-demand or ERP integration, Shopify's app ecosystem is genuinely unmatched and we will not pretend otherwise.
- You have a developer and want deep customisation. Shopify's theme language and APIs are
mature, well documented, and there is a large pool of developers who already know them.
- You are already on Shopify and it's working. Migrating a store that is making money is a
real cost. "Slightly cheaper" is not a good enough reason to move.
6. When a local platform makes more sense
- Your customers pay with cash on delivery, EasyPaisa, or a bank transfer more often than with
a card.
- You want the money to land in your own account, not to route through a platform.
- Your monthly software bill moving with the exchange rate is a real problem.
- You'd rather have local payments and COD working out of the box than a large app store you'll
never use.
What to do next
Don't take our word for the comparison — the two claims that matter most are checkable in five minutes:
- Open Shopify's payment providers documentation and confirm whether Shopify Payments is available
in Pakistan.
- Open Shopify's pricing page and find the third-party transaction fee for the plan you'd buy.
If those two things don't affect you, Shopify is a fine choice and you should use it. If they do, see what we charge — a flat monthly subscription in rupees, 0% commission, and your payment accounts stay yours.
